What does an ACE Tutor Session look like?
ACE Tutors help their tutees by initially getting to know them – this aids the tutors in learning about how they feel about school, their hobbies and interests and their future aspirations.
Once relationships are established, discussions may be centred around:
- Attitude to learning
- Skills and hobbies
- Subjects which a student requests support with
From these discussions, barriers are identified, incremental targets will be agreed by the student in order to give the student a focus to build on their successes. Progress against these targets is reviewed regularly, with the view to meet these targets by the end of the term.
These sessions are tailored specifically to support the individual child. Therefore, each child’s provision will look very different.
Sessions will focus around developing strategies that will improve:
Goal orientation is defined as an individual’s motivation and ability to make viable plans, set targets and objectives and take action towards desired goals.
Motivation is what causes an individual to want to do one thing, and not another. Intrinsic motivation relates to pupils’ inherent enjoyment or interest in a task, and has positive effects on academic performance.
School engagement measures pupils’ behavioural, emotional and cognitive engagement with school. Higher levels of school engagement are associated with greater resilience and academic performance.
Wellbeing refers to a state in which individuals thrive and flourish, including contentment and overall sense of purpose as well as day-to-day happiness.
